REEL EATS invites you to engage all of your senses. Join us for a monthly gastronomic film and story-telling event that brings together Toronto’s finest chefs, raconteurs and food lovers in one gloriously delicious evening. Themes generated by a famous culinary film lie at the heart of every event.

Like Water For Chocolate,” directed by Alfredo Arau, is like our Reel Eats evenings- a full sensory experience, only in this film’s case, throw in fabulous food prepared by the protagonist Tita who has a red-alert level case of unrequited love. Tita’s unfulfilled passion for Pedro transfers into the food she prepares- from a wedding cake that makes every wedding reception guest long for their first true love to a meal that ignites every diner’s inner desires.

In the spirit of Mexican cuisine, one of the original “slow foods”, we are honoured to have Guanajato-born, Mexican chef and flavour creator Chef Francisco Alejandri crafting our Like Water For Chocolate-inspired menu.

What I want to represent through these dishes is the passion and the labour of love involved in preparing Mexican cuisine which has been around for more than five hundred years and has seen very little changes. These are times of impatience; and we have lost the pleasure of slow cooking. I want people to know what big difference it makes when you take time to do things,” says Alejandri.

Chef Francisco will be supported by the professional culinary talents of our own Chef Vanessa Yeung. We are pleased to present you with a menu fit for Tita and Pedro in a world where their mutual love is anything but unrequited. Olé!

  • Mama Elena’s Sopa de Fideo Aguada con chorizo
    Vermicelli Pasta cooked al dente and finished in a spicy chorizo tomato broth, served with ripe banana

  • Pedro’s Almond Chicken
    Dark and white meat finished in a mild almond sauce

  • Earthy Sautéed mushrooms and potatoes served with wilted spinach

  • Pork in Mole a Spicy “Revolutionary” Mole Sauce
    Fall-off –the-bone pork ribs cooked in a spicy red mole
    served with White rice

  • Tita’s Passionate Deep Chocolate Torte served with sensual rose petal ice cream

  • Fire Quenching Mexican Agua Fresca (refreshing non-alcoholic beverage) of cucumber and parsley
